Aluminium hydroxide (ATH) and alumina are used as flame retardants, in ceramics and abrasives, and in the light-metals industry. They are filtered as a high-moisture cake β€” often over 50% moisture β€” and conventional box, belt or drum drying is slow, energy-hungry and needs a separate crushing and sieving step. A spin flash dryer dries the cake in seconds to under 1% moisture, with drying, disintegration and classification in one closed machine.

The drying challenge

  • Very wet cake β€” over 50% moisture off the filter press, too thick to pump.
  • Surface sintering and discolouration risk β€” high temperature can sinter the material or precipitate crystal water, so parameters must be controlled.
  • Flame-retardant ATH is ultrafine and must not be carried over β€” filter air velocity has to be kept low.
  • Low final moisture required (under 1%).
